Well, that sounds better than a straight talk with him, if I'm honest. What skill is he teaching you?

French or dancing. I'm hoping for French. My first suggestion was sword-fighting, but apparently if we did that there's a high chance he'd try to kill me and play it off as an accident. Sure sounds like the kind of guy who can be trusted to roam the ship totally unmonitored, right?

On this ship? Sounds like that's the general consensus.

Olden days dancing is lame.

Yeah, probably. Although I think I'd prefer it to club dancing, honestly. Those places are pretty much off-limits to me.

Why? They're not exactly emotional places.

They tend to be full of people, so they can be. And they're kind of a sensory overstimulation nightmare anyway. I can't stick around in them for long.

I guess that makes sense. I like them because they're overstimulating in a fun, anonymous way. No one expects you to have a long, meaningful conversation in a nightclub, and everybody's there for the same thing.

I see where the disconnect is. People aren't anonymous to me. They just can't be, entirely.

And everybody's not there for the same thing. Most are, but there's also a lot of romantic feelings, hangups, and annoyances at places like that. So there's more emotions than you might think.

Better than a big party here where you personally know a lot of the people, worse than that, or bad in equal but different ways?

I'm never at a party where I personally know a lot of the people.

But I imagine it would be very similar. The party might be a little better, because the general feeling of a party is usually enjoyment, rather than desperation or anxiety. I'd probably rank them about the same.

Huh. I usually hate parties where I know everybody there. Not that I go to very many, but the Marine Ball always sucked.

Fancy. Sounds awful. I can see you not enjoying those, but feeling obligated to go.

I've had enough concessions made for my unique brain that I at least can beg off of things like that. Or I just don't go and they have to reach me later. I've done that for a few awards ceremonies.

Feeling obligated nothing, they were a requirement for everyone in active service. Black tie and ball gowns, the whole shebang.

All right, so truly obligated, then.

I never would've made it in the military, that's for sure.

It worked well for me for a lot of the reasons this place doesn't. I'm a soldier, not a thinker.

You like structure.

Meanwhile, I thrive in chaos. Usually. I'm a little tired after this one, but that's because so much of this aftermath has been Barge politics.

It's the worst, isn't it. That's not chaos, it's just annoying.

Structure makes sense. Orders make sense. Chaos can be both really frustrating and really fun.

[She understands the draw, both on an intellectual and instinctive level. And as much as she likes clear directives, there's always been a part of her that's attracted to a whirlwind.]

That's very true. Although I've made it through enough chaotic events in my recent life that I think I might've learned to deprioritize the 'frustrating' and emphasize the 'fun'.

Of course, I say that and then we've got another breach due next month. But I don't really get a choice on emphasizing anything during those.

I don't do so good after them. Just a head's up.

Well, I don't either. I hold onto those personalities way harder when it's essentially me.

It might take me a few days before I start acting remotely like myself again. So depending on the damage, we can both find a room and stare at the ceiling and/or floor together.
