No, Shaw, I believe you when you say it's not about punishing Will. You explained it - if he's not going to let you in, you'll inject yourself. [His tone stayed soft and understanding.]

I am just sayin' that not givin' Will room to decide to come to you about this, due to the sitting, doesn't exactly further those goals. Now that doesn't mean I'm sayin' do nothin'. That doesn't mean I'm sayin' don't watch him like a hawk or monitor his movements, or hell, escort him around the ship.

[Just that, by nature, folks who are being watched will not behave in the most honest to themselves ways, which might put Shaw further away from her inmate in the ways that mattered right now.]

And I'm still curious how Avalon's bein' handled, though I suppose I can go talk to Rawne about that.

Will you be trustin' anyone to help you with those tasks?

[personal profile] tinstar 2023-10-12 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
At least now we're gettin' somewhere.

[He just wanted to understand how she saw things.]

Taking an hour to see your wife or go talk to Rawne is hardly abandonin' your post. I'm just sayin' - you need to put Will in a room for an hour and have someone keep an eye on him, speak up.

Wardening business is not personal crap - one, and you're basically doin' that anyway, except you chew your liver and stew in that time instead of takin' the next step in solving the problem.

A room of his choosing, doin' what he wants, and experience sittin' outside his door so everyone gets a little breathin' room. He can't slip out a window, can't call a cab and skiptown - it's called utilizin' the willing resources around you.

[This was literally part of his job description.]

There's a reason that the Marshals Service is a successful agency, Shaw. [Teamwork. Support. Like they'd done with the monsters. Like they'd touched on and gotten into in conversations.]

So let's get on the same page.

[personal profile] tinstar 2023-10-12 02:43 pm (UTC)(link)
And this is not the first honest conversation we've had. [They both still had p l e n t y of work to do in understanding each other, but he at least understood mostly where she stood and mostly why she was doing what she was doing here. ]

So what else is it? Malcolm? [The one elephant that Raylan did not want to go directly at, but even if Shaw had been wrong, if Malcolm hadn't sent him, the Issue was clearly there. The only question was what context it was in.]
tinstar: (What about u)

[personal profile] tinstar 2023-10-12 07:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Malcolm, who respects the system that is in place, understands that his inmate boyfriend needs a Warden because that's Will's ticket off this ship, someone to help him. You two don't have to get along for Will to graduate or for them to have a relationship - I never got on particularly well with Jedao when I was married to his. [Raylan had his own theories on that, but that kind of mess didn't belong in this conversation.]

Malcolm's a Warden too, and he's graduated one soul already. He's your ally in every single one of the goals you mentioned; it's all in his interests.

You've already spent plenty of time with him, what have you seen then?
tinstar: (U sure)

[personal profile] tinstar 2023-10-12 07:43 pm (UTC)(link)
The part where you didn't actually answer my question - you said he resents you and thinks Will doesn't need a warden but is that something he said or something that you decided to infer based on some action he's taken and I'm askin' you why you think he doesn't understand what our job is.

You don't like him, that's one thing, I'm just tryin' to get down to the reason.
tinstar: (what you're tellin me is)

[personal profile] tinstar 2023-10-13 06:28 pm (UTC)(link)
That opinion in this situation does not mean that Malcolm thinks Will doesn't need a Warden. But I'm also of the opinion that talks like that are better had alone with your inmate, unless the warden with you isn't going to undermine you doin' your job. Disagreements don't happen in front of the kids kinda thing.

Is this the only sticking point with him or is it others?

Lessons for the future, [It was said as a knowing side commentary alone and was a perfect view into his mind - if you don't let them get you in a position to make it worse, you don't have to worry about it. Of course, that did not mean that it worked all the time so - there was always next time.]

And I think at this point, both. There's no way one doesn't feed into the other.
tinstar: (What's that?!)

[personal profile] tinstar 2023-10-13 07:12 pm (UTC)(link)
God no. I mean that it's a lesson to not let things get to a place or situation where someone gets to undermine you like that. Controllin' when a conversation starts, when topics are brought up, what you are and aren't willin' to talk about in mixed company.

[personal profile] tinstar 2023-10-13 07:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Can't control how folks react, only how you respond to that reaction.

How far is he willin' to take that? Reactin' poorly, I mean.
