"And I'm not the captain because I could do it too easily."

Even if it's right - and she thinks that it probably was - she figures it's the type of thing that should be hard.

"I hope I get to meet her someday, your commander."

That gets an unexpected chuckle out of Eiffel. "Me too, actually." He gestures idly with his coffee as he talks. "God, can you imagine Minkowski as a warden? You saw how uptight she is, right? If she saw half the inmates here out of their cells she'd be on the Big Red Button faster than you can say Modern Major General."

"You mean we'd have a warden more controversial than me?" Shaw says, in mock offense. "Getting accused over and over again of wanting to steal all the inmates' stuff is my thing; I called dibs."

[littletonoidea]

"Oh yeah, she's a stickler for contraband. She confiscated every damn packet of cigarettes that I brought on board. I didn't even smoke them!" He pauses briefly. "Most of them. I only set the oxygen on fire once!"

"You're an idiot," Shaw says with a sigh, "and I wanna take her for drinks."

"Yeah, of course you do," he chuckles softly.

He looks down at his coffee again. "You're not, like... it doesn't make you a bad person, for killing the copies of people you care about. You didn't ask to get put in that situation."

"I don't like what it says about me that Decima managed to get me to do it when I thought they weren't copies. That's all."

She shrugs, uncomfortably.

"But I'm fine; I'm not angsting about it."

"Well. What were they doing when Decima made them go full Mirror World?" he asks gently.

"Mirror W--"

Okay, you know what; being confused about that doesn't matter.

"Uh, usually nothing overtly awful. They talked about how they didn't trust me anymore a lot. They only straight-up betrayed me a few times; I think Samaritan figured out pretty quick that that was a little too heavy-handed for me. That was in the early days; later, the simulations were centered around the idea that I'd already been turned. I'd glitch out, find a gun in my hand. Glitch out again, and Reese would be walking ahead with his back to me, the perfect target. I'd pull the trigger. On instinct, or because I was brainwashed, or-- I don't know. A lot of the details are fuzzy now."

Okay that's starting to make a lot more sense in the whole Shawna Lisa.

"Oh. So... just 'cos you don't remember killing people, that doesn't actually mean you... didn't kill them. In your brain."

[cactusy]

"I remember killing them." She directs the answer down at her hands, her voice wooden. "I don't always remember all the details, and I think I... mix up simulations, sometimes; there were a lot of them. But I remember killing them, Eiffel."

[littletonoidea]

"But you don't remember killing me," he clarifies. "Or Neal."

[cactusy]

"Oh."

She exhales.

"Yeah, no, not at all. Which. Yeah, you're right, that's a good sign."

[littletonoidea]

"Alright." And he smiles, partly relief but mostly to reassure her. "And you know I'm not gonna lie to you about that, right? I can't lie to save my life, literally, so you know you can believe me."

[cactusy]

"Thank you."

Her shoulders relax a little more.

"I didn't think you were lying maliciously. I can see how some people might see it as a... kindness, if they didn't really consider it my fault. But if you say you're not lying at all, I believe you."

[littletonoidea]

"Hey, if someone actually kills me? I'm gonna hold that over their heads for as long as we both shall live," he comments dryly. "But."

He looks down at his coffee to spare her the eye contact. "I know you don't wanna hurt me. I've known that since you got mind whammied by Lestat. So... look, I know that doesn't guarantee you won't ever hurt me, maybe, if things go completely pear-shaped or whatever. But it means I trust you, right as you are right now. But... if you can't trust yourself, maybe you could trust us?"

"I do. Both of you. You..." She swallows, and furrows her brow a little. "Steve and B are team - like my teammates from home, the kind of people that I go into battle with. You and Neal, though... I guess you really are like family. Brothers."
