Gonna kick your ass if you tell anybody about this.

[Shaw mumbles, still grinning, as she ducks her head down low to snatch up a piece of pancake in her teeth.

You know, I tried sleeping up in the loft with you, but it was too weird. You were really still.

[ She won't tell. Much as she loves dropping spicy tidbits into conversation to fluster everyone, there's a lot Root prefers to keep to just the two of them. This is one of those things.

She strokes Shaw's hair, letting her fingers trail over Shaw's skin as she straightens up again. ]

Mm, I can imagine. So you slept down here, on the couch. I hope the dogs gave you extra attention.

Bear climbed the ladder to sleep with you sometimes.

[The perks of having a ridiculously skilled military dog.]

Oh, what a sweet boy. [ Seriously, that's the cutest thing he could do! ] Now that I'm back, though, I can't wait to fall asleep holding you.

[ What can she say. She's soft for her wife. ]

When you're asleep and you're touched, you still react. During the coma, though? Nothing.

[Like she said - weird!]

It was like you were dead without being dead.

No wonder you thought it was weird.

[ Being like a mannequin, lifeless while alive... that sounds awful for someone to have to watch. ]

I'm going to graduate, Sameen. I'm not letting Samaritan win. You won't be losing me any time soon.

[Shaw doesn't answer immediately, instead using the time to finish off the last of her pancakes, suck her fingers clean of butter and syrup, and wipe them dry on her pants. Then she pulls off her hoodie and tosses it on the floor, scooting up close to Root in only her bra. It's skin-to-skin time.]

All that's dependent on luck, and I don't count on luck.

[Which almost certainly sounds harsher than she intends it to, so she adds:]

Nothing lasts forever, especially for people like me. You already died once. As far as I'm concerned, everything that happens after that... it's a bonus. And I'm grateful for whatever time we get.

[ Root also finishes her pancakes, a smaller portion anyway. She is more than happy to be skin to skin right now.

There's no refuting Shaw's statement. For all the skills they both possess, and for all that Root has the Machine guiding her, there is always a bit of uncertainty. Luck adds thrill to the job, but with the way things have escalated back home, depending on luck would be akin to opening their arms to death. So where someone else might take Shaw's statement as cold and uncaring, Root sees it as grounded and positive. When you're just a blip on the grand scale of time, appreciating what you have is the best, fullest way to live. ]

So am I. [ She drapes her arms around Shaw shoulders. ] I'm gonna make it last as long as I can, because eating this extra time feels... rude.

I do believe you can graduate.

[But that's not the same thing as being sure that she will ; that she'll be given the time to. ]

That's enough for me.

[ She leans in to brush her nose against Shaw's. ]

Break is over. I'm back now.
