[He shrugs.] You might find that you don't disagree with the reasons people who get up in arms about it, or that they don't disagree with your reasons, if you start with phrasing that suggests you're more willing to agree.

I'm not claiming that's fair, and I wouldn't suggest it to everyone. But I've gotten the impression you would rather focus on getting the work done instead of getting into unnecessary arguments. If we're speaking of nature, I think many tend to get defensive when they think they're being insulted. Even if that means taking a position they might not otherwise.

But, perhaps, if talking to someone else who doesn't think surveillance isn't the way to go, just stop at 'I think it's important to keep an eye on someone who's just murdered someone'. A simple statement of fact, and you can agree or disagree if someone else puts forth an idea about what to do instead. If they make any personal comment, it's on them.

If you comment on their character, then they can take it as an excuse not to listen.
