"Fair enough" meaning I can understand your reasons, but Kiryu is gone and you may need a new approach to this problem if he can't be replaced.

Consider advocates instead of a single mediator, since it's unlikely you two will ever find someone who 'gets' both of you.

advocates and mediators serve pretty different roles. Kiryu didn't argue for either of our interests, he sat there while we talked, asked questions, and guided us towards speaking for ourselves more effectively.

There's no one like Kiryu on board. I'm just suggesting you work with what you've got, instead of stalling progress hoping for what you want.

that's not what i'm doing. i think advocates and treating this like a courtroom would be harmful. and i think Kiryu had the right idea in forcing us to speak for ourselves, considering this is about us communicating.

I'm not saying you should use me, Shaw. I'm just saying this approach, and having Jedao, might not yield the result you're after.

Because you're not going to find someone who can do what Kiryu did. Malcolm feels cornered by every person you feel comfortable with, and apparently that goes both ways.

Malcolm agreed to Jedao. i was kind of surprised that he did, but he did.

You should be surprised. He agreed to someone he doesn't trust because you vetoed every person he suggested and there was no other way to actually get the meeting to happen.

he suggested one person who wasn't even here at the time he suggested it.

Caffrey. and i don't want to talk about why i vetoed him, but it's still a veto.

Look, Tennant. if he doesn't actually want to do this with Jedao and wants me to call it off, then i'll call it off. is that what he wants?

No. He wants to try with Jedao and he wants to figure things out with you.

But it's in everyone's best interests to be open to trying new approaches if this doesn't work.

you know what's worse than not trying something, Lark?

no. there are a lot of times when the risk of failure is worth it.

it's doing something that will definitely make things worse, and that's what i think advocates and spokespeople and speaking through proxies would do. i get that Malcolm feels more comfortable having people speak for him and interpret his words for other people. but Kiryu thought that it was important that he learn to speak for himself, even when it's hard. if we go back on that, we're undoing everything Kiryu was working towards.

So what are you going to do if he can't work with Jedao?

i don't know. try to find somebody else. but if he doesn't want to do it while speaking for himself, then that's a no-go for me. if this is going to work, neither of us should use crutches. and that includes people whose primary goal is arguing for the interests of one or the other of us, instead of listening to us talk and calling us out on unhelpful behavioral patterns.
